Guide Nick Jackson had the day off this Saturday, so what other thing to do but go fishing! He met up with some fellow anglers and headed out to one of their favorite beaches on Pyramid Lake. Between the group there were over a dozen fish landed, with this nice Summit Lake strain weighing in around 8 lbs. caught on a tui chub pattern by Nick Jackson of Pyramid Lake Guides.

With winter storms moving into the area water temps are dropping- which means good fishing from shore. There were several reports of double digit fish being landed in the past week. The deeper shelves have been more productive than shallower flats, and the afternoon bite has also been producing nice fish. Try Doug’s Popcorn Beetle, a Booby in white/chartreuse, a large Wooly Worm with a red tail, or Tui Chub patterns!
The search for the massive Lahontan Pilot Peak Cutthroat Trout continues, but it will be a month or two before water temps are cool enough to bring these world record cutties into shore. In the meantime, please use caution in your water crafts- if the wind picks up get to shore and throw a zig jig instead! (Creator of the Zig Jig, Richard Cross, will be at the lake this week- keep an eye out for this legendary angler!)
We hope you all have a fun and safe opener out at the lake! We are so excited to see what big fish this season will bring, hoping to see more 20 pounders and even bigger….
Happy fishing everyone, and please remember to respect the Tribe and the lake, and follow all regulations!
Clean up crews and volunteers have been working to clean up debris left in the aftermath of the Tule Fire surrounding the small community of Sutcliffe, NV at Pyramid Lake. The Tribe worked with first responders to evacuate the town and get the wild fire contained. A few small structures were destroyed, and an elderly couple had to be rescued, but overall no one was harmed and the blaze is now 100% contained.
The community is now gearing up for Burning Man coming in late August, as well as the opening day of fishing season Oct. 1. En route to Burning Man thousands of visitors pass through Pyramid Lake’s small town of Nixon, Nevada. Convenience store workers stay busy around the clock 24 hours a day to ring up the eccentric guests coming from around the world headed to the desert festival.
We’re certain the non-stop week long party is a great time, but we will have to take your word for it! We are saving our energy for the upcoming Lahontan Cutthroat Trout season opener- starting Oct. 1, 2016. Get your lines ready- we can’t wait for the hunt for the World’s Largest Cutthroat Trout to begin once again. See you soon!
As the fishing season winds down we would like to express our gratitude to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe for allowing us to enjoy this beautiful land, it’s people, and the amazing fishery this lake provides. We appreciate the opportunity to guide our wonderful clients in such a unique location. Thank you for a great season everyone! We will keep you all posted on updates and look forward to October 1! — Booking for next season at DRYFLYNICKJULI@GMAIL.COM
John Cancilla landed this healthy Pyramid Lake strain cutty (aka Summit Lake strain) just before sundown tonight at the Nets on Pyramid. The winds were heading east away from shore and the weather had been calm so we expected the bite to be slow- but John landed this bad boy just 15 minutes in- we didn’t get out to the lake until about 6 and out on the water about 6:30pm. John fished the Truckee river this morning with Guide Doug Ouellette and finished off the evening out at Pyramid with friends Jeff Eichelberger and Julianne Peterson. It was the only fish landed in the short two hour outing- with a few more bites missed by the crew. Overall it was successful day on the water!
Check out this great story about the natural spawn of the Lahontan Cutthroat (LCT). The first sign of natural spawning after the reintroduction of the once thought to be extinct species was in 2014 and the progression continues. Fishery Biologists and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe are doing a great job of tracking the fish to watch their location and behavior.
“The hope is that the Pilot Peak LCT will soon begin to spawn in the same historic waters as they did as far back as the end of the last ice age more than 10,000 years ago. This is an extremely important fish to the Pyramid people.” — read the whole story here MONSTER LAHONTAN CUTTHROAT
We are very grateful to be a part of this amazing community, to learn of the native people, and for the opportunity to fish on this beautiful and unique fishery. Thank you Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe!
This week brought some very nice weather on Pyramid Lake. We had a few days around 80 degrees, with water temps being reported at around 60. Such nice weather typically hinders the fishing on the alkaline lake, but if you put in the time expect to land a few. Devoted angler Tawni Capurro landed several fish over the week including this nice chromed out Pilot Peak. Lookin’ good Tawni- you go girl!
Les and Ben from Ogden, UT landed around 50 fish during their two guided days on Pyramid Lake, NV. The first day started off with a slow morning but ended up as a killer afternoon- Les landed this awesome 14 pounder just after lunch- it was his first fish on Pyramid.
We had a consistent bite the following day with a dozen fish each. Unlike the day before, we got ours on the strip with woolyworms and popcorn beetles (the day prior indicator fishing with midges was the preferred technique). It was a pleasure guiding this two from our home state of Utah- we hope to see them again out at the Mid!
